What have you learned from your audience feedback?

In our Video choice which is 'N.E.R.D EVERYBODY NOSE' is a fast pace song. Based on that we agreed to do a performance video because is relevant to the song . We used a lot of fast cuts which also went with the beat, it was relevant to the song.
These are some of the comments we received from the audience.
  • Editing was "dead professional and the performance was good as well, it matched the story, we used a lot of special effects such as the televisions". We filmed Sinead on green screen then we scaled the image down to a smaller size so it was able to fit on the televisions, then used the televisions as the image behind her so she appeared on them.
  • One of the audience pointed it that out "The faces kept appearing on the tvs, i like that".

  • The audience were also very impressed by the use of Hip Hop atmosphere within the video, It stood out the most to the audience because of the use of the mise en scene . we went to a local skate park, and a heavy graffiti area to shoot different scenes and stills for the video itself. We decided to go on these places because we knew it will pay off and also it will link with the hip hop culture and the audience we targeted. We recorded skateboarders doing tricks and skills which later on we edited so it can sync to the rhythm of the song. Those were some of the Positive comments we received from the audience.

  • Other main features the audience thought stood out the most were the texture and the colourfull back ground, The humor, The tempo of the shots and the general pace of the video, the use of Pac-man background via green screen.
  • The audience told us that the editing did not flow so as to tell the storyline, that there were just fast cuts all the way through. There is less lip-sync and full of performance, We needed some of the close shots because there was a lot of long shots. Those are the things the audience pointed out needed for improvement.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

In the build up to creating our music video we tried to base various shots on music videos which flow with a quick tempo where there is a lot going on. We started off analysing the original NERD –Everyone Nose video and gained ideas such as some members of the group miming the lyrics as they went on whilst performing at the same time. Another video that inspired us was Asher Roth – I Love College with various partying and riot shots to show people having a good time which we thought would go along with our video aswell. Although we couldn’t film partying scenes we decided to just include the actors within our group having a good time and acting crazy for the camera, whilst it was relevant for the video itself.

We set a location for the green room so we could include different scenes with backgrounds edited in for the suitability of the video. This meant we could set a scene in the video which we wouldn’t of been able to include without the college facilities. We were inspired to include graffiti as a backdrop in our video to show colour and expression with the song and so that it wasn’t just plain and boring, so we made it bright due to the quickness and happiness of the song. We used a dull grey backdrop when the sad slow moment of the video came on and the video slowed down alongside the tempo and there was a very slow cut rate to match the speed. Our ideas developed as the filming went on and through various different shots and Mise en scene we included were inspired by lyrics within the song along with its quick pace. One of the characters we used was a nerd which was inspired by the band’s name who recorded the song and we decided to show the irony in the behaviour of the nerd as he was cool , which nerds aren’t normally thought to be and he only really wanted to have a good time just as the ‘nerds’ do who actually perform the real song.

Obviously there is a difference from our version of Everyone Nose and the real music video itself, however we did make our video unique from what someone else who were to attempt the song and produce a video would do. Such as using Sinead a female performer to lip sync to a male's voice, this was executed well as the information from our audience feedback did not find this odd. A unique creative ideas such as Sinead in retro televisions and skatepark locations is what we want the audience to remember vividly, as this is not common in music videos today making our video stand out from the rest. as this We did use inspirations from various other videos we have seen and decided that it would be best to use various odd shots as well as locations across college and the city centre as well as a skatepark. We did notice that NERD were keen skaters and decided to involve some freestyle skateboarding in our video to show it typical of a NERD video.

We spent a lot of time editing to get our video right and to mix in all these various different scenes or shots to show the variation in filming and so we could fit them all in to match the tempo of the track and that they are relevant to the lyrics themselves. We also had to make sure that it could definitely be identified as a legitimate music video and had a mix of performance and miming.

Media Technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages

Final Cut Pro: This is the Industry standard software that is usually used by professionals, we used for editing our music video. Since wanted to create a modern video, editing techniques that aided us were transitions and video filters such as, Earthquake and Center Wipes. This helped us merge our different locations together discreetly such as the skate park and graffiti locations. As you can see, layering of different sequence made our video look authentic, as this is used in many music videos of today. When it came to editing our green screen sequences we had difficulty hiding the green areas and this problem was even noticed in our audience feedback. This ended up with us making changes, ultimately boosting people's opinion of the video. Non-linear editing was possible with today technology of the past, creating visually pleasing video through the juxtaposition.

Cameras: Using cameras such as Canon Legria Fs306 which is compact enabled us with portability to different locations, with the quality outcome a sound standard. This camera is not expensive, considering it is up to date technology that used as memory card instead of tape. Using this camera was easy as it is used in many households, allowing us to taking pictures and film on different settings; also used to record the director commentary, taking the sound and editing this on Final Cut Pro. JVC camera were also used during the filming for the green screen, three cameras that allowed us to edit on fly; cutting from different cameras in different locations in the studio aiding this was vision mixer and tricaster.

Green Screen: We decided to use the green screen as one our locations, as we thought it would add more variety visually. This was the first time for many of us using this technology, after trial runs we figured out the what were the best angles to film from, what level of lighting is best and making sure the green curtain fills up the whole background while filming.

Photoshop CS5: This graphics package software that is used by professionals and for domestic use, it helped us create the specific background we wanted, as shown in our video we were able to create moving pictures. Creating our album cover and magazine advert was done using photoshop, thankfully we were all experienced using this software and didn't come with much difficulty incorporating our research on this, consolidating our skills.

Internet: It allowed us to research and inspire us as our video developed. As we used Blogger.com by using the internet allowed us to document our progression is an easy and simple way, aided with pictures and videos allowing us to be creative.
Youtube was used as part of our research and was able to take a video and use it for our background for the DJ and Dancing sequences, keeping momentum with our moving backgrounds. Another site that contributed to our research is Muzu.tv, an alternate site to Youtube.
In all technology helped us during research, while software helped us through he editing stages. In all, this digital technology gave us an advantage making production simple.

Potential Album Cover

We began to put ideas together of a mock cover for the album.

We thought we would develop this in different ways:
~ Using our own images as it is our own interpretation
~ Promoting the themes that are in the video such as graffiti, retro styles and colours
~ Using the performers
~ possible skate borders

Graffiti Theme

We found a colourful location of graffiti which we thought would be a brilliant location choice, also using this to link into your skate park location.
