Costume Research

Costume plays a major part in many music videos, it is vital that we get this right. While researching different Artist we come across many style guru’s such as: Kanye West, Kanye’s style is preppy nerdy and expensive to say the least.

Mr. West’s music video’s and red carpet appearances scream out ‘extravagant’ and won him ‘best dressed male 2009’ and ‘Worse dressed’ on the red carpet by vanity fair, But after looking closely at his wardrobe we have already come up with some outfit idea’s for our video which will compliment the song and make it stand out from every other.

Pharrell Williams is the best-dressed man in the world, Well Esquire seems to thinks so, and branded him "Best Dressed Men in the World’ September 2009. The N.E.R.D star he has combined urban and luxury into a hip-hop style. Even creating his award winning clothes-line (Billionaire-Boys-club and Ice-cream) its all about the visual impact of our video and it is key that the audience are enjoy watching a music video that is busting with colour and style. Its so necessary that performers and actors look like ‘extravagant’ stars and the way they are clothed is important. They need to be in the correct character to portray what we are trying to get across to our audience.

Moving onto female fashion icons; Rihanna sets the trends with her style and is one of the most favorite by designer, who are fighting to have her in the front row of their shows. What began with a change in color and cutting her hair became a style as feminine as innovative as retro and modern and so fresh and elegant. Rihanna imposes her personality through her look and each garment and accessory that she chose’s shows that the singer has her own unique sense of style, video’s such as ‘Rude boy’ demonstrates just how controversial she really is, when styling the females which will be in our music video we will look in depth at Rihanna’s previous music video’s paying attention to the loud jewelry and bold outfits and seeing weather this will work well in our music video.

Amber Rose a massive icon especially in U.S.A. The far from tedious super model is known for her over sized sun glasses, blue hair and popsicle colored lips. Amber Rose

will defiantly be a candidate we defiantly take into consideration when finally styling our actresses for our music video.

Performance And Narrative

Taking into consideration the popularity of this genre Hip hop pop is on the rise we wanted to make the performance relate, after researching similar music videos to ours we wanted to a portray a fast paced atmosphere.

Such as using multiple girls to lip sync the first few lines of the song using extreme close up using a quick cut rate, and we need multiple gils for this we plan to use friends as extras or just have a female group member lip sync the words to the camera.

Having 6-8 pictures displayed after this of a girls transitioning from the beginning of a night out having put consideration into her appearance with her ending up with looking tired with make-up running down her face and messy hair.

Incorporating objects that are associated with girls we will have clips of females using make-up, putting heals on, showing off jewelry etc.

A certain point in the lyrics "Here's a towel, wipe your face.." a girl could follow the narrative once then walk across a cross multiple greens as if staggering around.

As many dance videos have text displayed in videos we wanted to consider this idea and have the text appear on screen as the words are being said by the song artist.

To enhance the fast paced atmosphere we will also film the public in clubs, this has been made possible as a member of our group has used personal connections.

Analysis of a music video similar to – N.E.R.D Everyone Nose

Asher Roth – I Love College

This video by Asher Roth is very similar to Everyone Nose by N.E.R.D. Both videos are within the same hip-hop genre except one is by a group and the other by a solo artist having typical features of the having many girls shown in the atmosphere I Love College is a very similar video to Everyone Nose as it shows a party going on within college which N.E.R.D also seem to show in there video too, it seems to be a very wild atmosphere with plenty of people drinking alcohol and acting very chaotic whilst there is also various clips of the artist performing the song itself. The video seems to be focusing on Asher himself and how much he is enjoying the party whilst also showing the busy atmosphere around him in relation to the lyrics as N.E.R.D also do in there video. A contrast is that there is a big performance in Asher Roth's video, with a great deal of the video following him lip syncing.

Various different shots make it look as if it is fro a handheld camera to show a person attending the party’s point of view of what is going on around him. There are various high angle shots as well as point of view shots to show the high amount of craziness going on and to get a grasp of what is actually going is merely just a party. A lot of use of tracking shots which seems to be done in one go which will be hard to create, but since our song is more fast paced we will have a quicker cut rate. Close ups are a strong aspect of the video which we will keep in mind for ours, so that so it seems to the viewer they are engaged in the atmoshpere.Various shots are also shown which are relevant to the lyrics along with performance which makes this video amplification, so that the viewers mind doesn’t wander and they understand what the song is about. However although not every shot has to show relevance to what the lyrics are saying and Asher Roth does this by showing different shots of either chaos happening in the party or him rapping his lyrics whilst the party is going on behind him. The video is clever and shows that not everything has to be necessary to the lyrics and have various different themes as it can just merely have a simple script and one or two set locations.Little use of editing to create a more realistic effect, only camera dazzle giving the effect it is very amateur filming.

As the the title of song is " I Love College" it is typical that its on a college campus, as the parties mainly take place at night flashing disco lights are used along with the light from the camera itself. For props plastic cups are flaunted as they are associated with college parties and getting drunk off alcohol, along with typical american clothes and jumpers and shirts having printed text saying college; while the girls were clothes show off more skin letting the viewers make their own assumption of this.

Our group opinion what makes this an effect video is how he makes the viewer feel like we are experiencing this atmosphere and his world, showing his references and lip syncing directly to the camera; which aids us to develop our use in camera shots, editing and performance.

Initial Ideas

In our group many different ideas were brought up if we should follow a narrative or performance, so we all researched music videos and songs that we preferred individually.

Simone: Kanye West - Work Out Plan
This was chosen since the video followed the narrative was followed in the video for most of the duration, debated in the group we
found this not to be to everyone's taste. A positive from this was that the genre was appreciated was following music that has a quicker pace, allows us to create a video more entertaining.

Sean: Fit But You Know It/ Billy No Mates - The Streets
Majority of us in the group liked the video since it had a simple idea of someone walking down a street while interacting with other people, also using effects such as moving pictures which we all liked the idea of; To make this idea stronger since we were following the narrative began to look at the lyrics of the song, after discovering certain locations in song were mentioned we decided this was to this song wasn't broad enough.

Alphonce: Billionaire - Travie McCoy ft. Bruno Mars
This was developed from the previous idea, the video had a more of a storyline alongside with being simple enough that we say the lyrics to the camera.
Although this was a developed idea we found it hard to follow the narrative, since majority of the video was exterior with use of many props.
After watching videos from previous past students we began to take into consideration a brand, this would link into our cd and magazine ad.

Sinead: Everyone Nose - N.E.R.D

As group we all agreed on this idea since we would have a diverse video that is visually entertaining, following partially the narrative while being inspired by the video. With majority of the video and the lyrics main theme gravitating around girls we decide to follow this and develop this into our own interpretation. Since the popularity for hip pop with dance beats incorporated in on the rise which we took into considering in choosing this, appealing to 18-28our video is relatable.
